Pink Oyster MushroomPink Oyster Mushroom (Pleurotus djamor)
Fast-growing in summer, visually striking, and full of character. They also have a unique flavour and meaty mouthfeel, so very different from a field (button) mushroom. They fry up crispy, and often refered to as vegan bacon!

Grow Stages
Step 2: How it works
Growing our mushrooms is easy, fast & fun. Everythings done! Just kick back and watch them grow.
Incubation
Once your kit arrives, simply place it somewhere warm where you can keep an eye on it. During this stage, the white mycelium grows and spreads through the substrate.
Pinning
After around two weeks, small “pins” (baby mushrooms) begin to appear. These early stages are delicate, so regular misting helps support healthy growth.
Growing & harvest
Mushrooms grow quickly at this stage and are usually ready to harvest within five days. Simply pull and twist — they should come away easily.
Enjoy
Now it’s time to enjoy the fruits of your labour. Oyster mushrooms are incredibly versatile in the kitchen — and if you need inspiration, we have plenty of delicious recipes waiting.
Future Harvests & Care
With minimal care, most kits will produce another 1–2 harvests (around three in total). If you keep it hydrated and follow the instructions, you can often extend the kit for additional flushes. It’s up to you how far you take it.
Step 3: You’re not growing alone
We grow these kits ourselves, on our farm, every day. From the moment your kit arrives to the moment you harvest, we’re here to support you with clear guidance, timely reminders, and real human help if you need it.
Free grow guide
You’ll receive a simple printed guide that walks you through each stage, so you always know what’s happening — and what to expect next.
Timed emails
Short, well-timed emails arrive as your kit changes — gentle reminders rather than instructions, helping you respond at the right moment.
Growing resources
You’ll have access to a growing library of guides and answers, shaped by years of hands-on growing and the questions people ask most often.
Personal support
We’re real people who grow these kits every day. If something doesn’t look or feel quite right, we’re here to help.
Frequently asked questions
If you’re new to growing mushrooms, it’s normal to have questions. These are the most common things people ask before — and during — their first grow.
What is the yield? what size should i get?
The bag size (weight) will influence the yield. The general rule of thumb: you should get about half the bag’s weight in mushrooms.Over the life of the mushroom bag, estimates are:- 3kg – Good for a single person, or a couple of occasional mushroom eaters. About 1.5kg
- 4kg – a couple, or a single person on a plant-based diet. About 2kg
- 5kg – household of 4 or a couple on a plant-based diet. About 2.5kg
If you care for the grow kit, you should get more. See our advanced Grow Guide on how to do this.
How long will it last?
With minimal care, the grow kit should last about 6-8 weeks and give 3 flushes (harvests). With care, basically soaking it in a bucket of water, it can last over 6 months and give many flushes.
Our focus is on our customer’s experience, so we’re here to help get the maximum potential from each bag.
Are they easy to grow?
With our kits, everything is done, so there is nothing to do until the mushrooms start to grow.
When they do grow, care is required for the 5 days that the mushrooms are actually growing.
At its simplest and in ideal conditions, the only equipment you need is a spray bottle, and your only job is to mist them frequently when they are growing. Luckily, the right conditions for NZ mushroom growing are perfect for most of the year.
Do they grow in the dark?
Short answer: No! In nature, these mushrooms grow on trees in the deep shade of the forest. So, inside light is about right. They are okay with a little sun, but be careful not to let this dry them out. Interestingly the UV in sunlight will help them produce vitamin D in a similar way our body does.
However, they do not need light to grow (as a plant does) so they are okay without light.
