From Curiosity to Medicinal Mushrooms
From the beginning, our goal was simple: bring a more scientific and transparent approach to medicinal mushrooms in New Zealand.
As we explored fungal biology and the remarkable compounds some species produce, we also saw how much confusion surrounds the supplement market. Many products rely on marketing claims rather than clear information about species, extraction methods, or active compounds.
Mycobio was created to offer a more grounded alternative built on three principles: science-driven extracts, education, and responsible sourcing.

The MycoBio Framework: Our System of Integrity
To cut through the marketing noise, we also developed a three-stage audit. This is how we ensure every mushroom extract meets the same standards we hold at our Ōhau farm.
1. Biological Origin
While we cultivate gourmet varieties at our farm in Ōhau, we source our medicinal extracts from their ancestral "Di Dao" regions. This ensures the mushrooms are grown on their natural substrates in the specific climates required to trigger the production of complex bioactive compounds.
2. Extraction Protocol
A mushroom's most valuable compounds: like Beta-glucans are often locked behind tough cell walls (chitin). We utilize a pressurized dual-extraction process (purified water and food-grade ethanol) to break these walls down. We ensure the compounds are highly bioavailable.
3. Verification Layer
Trust should be verifiable. Every batch of MycoBio extract is subjected to third-party laboratory testing. We provide Certificates of Analysis (COA) for every product to confirm exact potency levels and ensure the total absence of heavy metals or contaminants.
Learning From Fungi
Growing mushrooms quickly raises deeper questions.
Working closely with fungi every day reveals how little we typically notice about these organisms. Beneath the surface, fungi perform remarkable ecological work, breaking down organic matter, recycling nutrients, and supporting entire ecosystems.
Spending time cultivating mushrooms naturally leads to curiosity about the biology behind them. What compounds do these organisms produce? Why have certain species been used medicinally for centuries? And what does modern research reveal about their potential?
Nature's Systems Engineers
Fungi operate as complex biological systems.
Through vast underground networks, they connect plants, cycle nutrients, and transform organic material back into life-supporting resources. These processes mirror many of the systems concepts Brent had spent decades working with in the corporate world, feedback loops, resilience, and adaptive networks.
Seeing these principles expressed in nature offered a new perspective on both biology and systems thinking.
Understanding fungi as complex biological systems naturally led to a deeper question: how could the beneficial compounds they produce be best extracted and made available in forms that support human health?

An Educational and Scientific Approach
As our curiosity grew, so did the need to understand mushrooms more deeply.
At Mycobio we take a science-informed approach to mycology, drawing on both modern research and the long history of medicinal mushrooms in traditional health systems.
Studying how fungi grow, what compounds they produce, and how they interact with their environment and our bodies helps shape how we approach medicinal mushrooms today.

Sourcing Quality
Producing a meaningful mushroom extract begins long before the extraction process itself. It starts with the quality and authenticity of the mushrooms used.
Many traditional herbal systems emphasise the importance of origin — a principle often described as Di Dao, meaning that herbs grown in the right place and conditions develop their full potential.
At Mycobio we work with growers who prioritise natural cultivation and careful growing practices. Starting with high-quality mushrooms ensures that the extracts we create truly reflect the qualities of each species.

From Curiosity to Mycobio
What began as curiosity about growing mushrooms gradually evolved into a deeper exploration of their medicinal potential.
Today, Mycobio focuses on sourcing high-quality mushroom extracts that reflect both careful cultivation and a deep respect for fungal biology.
Our goal is simple: to share the remarkable benefits of medicinal mushrooms while staying grounded in the lessons we first learned growing them.

How we grow is as important as what we grow
The same principles that guide our approach to medicinal mushrooms shape how we run the farm, using circular systems, minimal waste, and a commitment to doing things properly. See how it all fits together.
